Стаття присвячена одному з традиційно проблемних питань балто-слов’янської ономастики, яке стосується походження назв Литви, що тісно пов’язані з відповідними етнонімами литовської та інших мов, у тому числі української. Ідеться передусім про низку праць члена-кореспондента НАН України А. П. Непокупного (періоду 1971‒1998 рр.), у яких окреслена тема досліджується в різних аспектах, серед них «етнічна інфляція» і «географічна багатозначність» назви Литви, про що свідчить насамперед матеріал української та інших слов’янських мов: не тільки хороніми або етноніми, а й деякі інші (загальні) назви, зокрема збірні. Особливо слід виділити його публікації 1994 й 1998 рр., присвячені історичним збірним значенням укр. литва, які своєрідним чином перетинаються з найновішою («військово-історичною») гіпотезою щодо походження литовського ендоніма Lietuva. Розглянуто й прокоментовано етимологічні концепції литовських та інших дослідників (як історичні, так і сучасні) стосовно порушеного питання, у тому числі традиційно популярну «гідронімічну», а також «географічні» й згадану «військово-історичну» версії. Зіставлено фактичний матеріал не тільки литовської та української, а й низки інших європейських мов різної генеалогічної належності (балтійських, слов’янських, германських, романських). Окрім наявних наукових праць, дотичних до теми, використано різномовні етимологічні джерела, а також тлумачні словники української та інших мов. Приділено увагу орфографічним, граматичним і особливо семантичним характеристикам відповідних лексем, зокрема українських, що становлять певний інтерес у порівняльно-історичному плані, оскільки вони спонукають до міркувань, пов’язаних з походженням та історією назви Литви, дослідження яких не втрачає своєї важливості й актуальності.

NAMES OF LITHUANIA IN EUROPEAN LANGUAGES AND THE PROBLEM OF ETYMOLOGIZING THE CHORONYM BASE
The article is devoted to one of the traditionally problematic issues of Balto-Slavic historical and modern onomastics, which concerns the origin of the names of Lithuania, closely related to the corresponding ethnonyms of Lithuanian and other languages, including Ukrainian. This is primarily a series of works by Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine A. P. Nepokupnyi (period 1971‒1998), in which the outlined topic is explored in various aspects, including «ethnic inflation» and «geographical ambiguity» of the name of Lithuania, as evidenced primarily by the material of Ukrainian and other Slavic languages: not only horonyms or ethnonyms, but also some other (general) names, in particular collective ones. Particularly noteworthy are his publications of 1994 and 1998, devoted to the historical collective meanings of the Ukrainian word литва, which in a peculiar way intersect with the newest («military-historical») hypothesis regarding the origin of the Lithuanian endonym Lietuva. The etymological concepts of Lithuanian and other researchers (both historical and modern) regarding the raised issue are considered and commented on, including the traditionally popular «hydronymic» as well as «geographical», and the above-mentioned «military-historical» version. The factual material not only of Lithuanian and Ukrainian, but also of a number of other European languages of different genealogical affiliation (Baltic, Slavic, Germanic, Romance) is compared. In addition to existing scientific works related to the topic, multilingual etymological sources, as well as explanatory dictionaries of Ukrainian and other languages, are used. Attention is paid to the orthographic, grammatical, and especially semantic characteristics of the relevant lexemes, in particular Ukrainian ones, which are of certain interest in a comparative-historical sense, since they prompt considerations related to the origin and history of the name of Lithuania, the study of which does not lose its importance and relevance.
