This article examines the fate of the Ukrainian language in territories temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation. In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea. During that year, Moscow provided support for the establishment of the self-proclaimed «Donetsk People’s Republic» and «Luhansk People’s Republic». Since the launch of its full-scale invasion, Russia has gained control of additional Ukrainian territories, including parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, parts of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson Oblasts, and briefly, parts of the Kharkiv Oblast. This article builds upon an earlier study that examined developments of the Ukrainian language in the temporarily occupied territories from 2014 through fall 2022 (Moser 2023), with a focus on subsequent developments. Specifically, it examines the overall devastating developments in Ukrainian language teaching and the contradictory, but prevalently linguicidal Russian discourse on the Ukrainian language. A particular focus is placed on the peculiar narrative of «classical Ukrainian».

Keywords: Ukrainian language; Ukrainian language policy; Russian language policy; temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine; linguicide; Russian discourse on languages; «classical Ukrainian language».
